1931年、福岡市に生まれる。西南学院大学卒業。
独学で油絵を学ぶ。
その後、二科会の伊藤研之（1907～1978）に師事し本格的な絵画の道に入る。
当初、師の影響を受けた青春の憂いの濃い心象風景を描く。
しかし、彼は二科会だけでは満足できない創造への荒々しい情熱につき動かされていた。
それが彼を前衛芸術家集団「九州派」への参加にかりたてる。
そしてこの前衛的な絵画運動を通じて次第に抽象の世界へと入り、激しい筆致と大胆なフォルム、そして鮮やかな色彩によって、内なる情熱を爆発させた。
その激しさは年とともに洗練されていくが、内に秘めた情熱はさめることなく、その表現はますます自由閣達さを増し奔放になっていった。
明るい原色がうねる生命力あふれる抽象画を描いたことで知られる。

1951年二科展初入選。
1957年九州派に参加するも2年後に脱会。
「博多っ子の度肝を抜いた前衛美術集団『九州派』の一員としてのみならず、コラムニストとして、あるいはテレビや講演会での雄弁家として、また軽妙洒脱な文筆家として、その名前を記憶されています」
1959年二科にて特選を受賞。
1977年二科退会。

一時期、西南学院中学校の美術担当講師をつとめ、1950年代谷川雁らの文学運動“サークル村”に参加。
食通で、西日本新聞に「昭和一ケタのくいしんぼ日記」「エカキの小休止」を連載するなど、随筆やテレビで幅広く活動。
またがん手術の体験記「直腸切断」を出版。優しくシャイでいて強じんな博多町人の代表のような人だった。

現存する作品は決して数多くはない。
しかし、アトリエに残されている作家自身の眼で選びぬかれた作品群や、住作として友人、知人に愛蔵された作品群から、画家寺田健一郎の芸術の真随が脈々と伝えられてくる。

Born in Fukuoka City in 1931.
Graduated from Seinan Gakuin University.
Self-taught in oil painting, he later studied under Kenshi Ito of the Nika-kai and began to pursue painting in earnest.
At first, influenced by his teacher, he painted melancholy mental landscapes of youth.
However, he was driven by a wild passion for creation that was not satisfied with the Nika-kai alone.
This led him to join the avant-garde group “Kyushu-Ha”. Through this avant-garde painting movement, he gradually entered the world of abstraction and exploded his inner passion with intense brush strokes, bold forms, and vivid colors.
Although his intensity became more refined over the years, his inner passion remained unabated, and his expression became increasingly freewheeling and unrestrained.
He painted abstract paintings full of vitality with bright, undulating primary colors.

1951 First selection for the Nika Exhibition.
1957 Joined Kyushu-Ha, but left two years later.
He is remembered not only as a member of Kyushu-Ha, an avant-garde art group that took the Hakata people by surprise, but also as a columnist, an eloquent speaker on television and at lectures, and a witty and stylish writer.
1959 Awarded a special prize at the Nika.
1977 Resigned from Nika.

For a time, he was an art teacher at Seinan Gakuin Junior High School, and in the 1950s he participated in the “Circle Village” literary movement led by Tanigawa Gan and others.
A gourmand, he has been active in a wide range of activities, including writing essays for the Nishinippon Shimbun and appearing on television.
He also published a book about his experience of cancer surgery, “Rectal Amputation”.
He was a representative of the kind, shy, and strong Hakata townspeople.
