■ text
After working at a gallery for 9 years I decided to quit and become independent, so I went to Tokyo and visited countless artists and artworks that were lined up in the galleries.
One day near Tokyo station heavy rain came pouring down, pushing me to enter a gallery. It was Gallery S.
As I entered the gallery, trying to dry my hair and clothes with a handkerchief, a small wood carved doll caught my attention.
Thinking about it now I can not recall any of the artworks being exhibited on the walls, just that small wood carved doll that was not taller than 20 cm, staring at me.
It was my first encounter with Ryosuke Yasumoto, an artist capable of creating statelessness landscapes and figures.
“May I touch the doll?” I asked the gallery’s staff, but before I could even complete that sentence I was already holding it.
It did not have any eyes, ears, mouth or nose it was shaped as a Piero. As I passed my fingers through the rustic wood I could feel its warmth and see the doll’s calm expression. Words can not describe its loveliness, I was charmed from the moment I saw it, and became eager to meet the artist that had created this doll.
I was told by the gallery’s staff that the artist had a studio in Matsudo City, Chiba Prefecture. Without thinking twice in that rainy day I went straight to Matsudo City. The only problem was that even though I had the address for his studio I had no way of communicating with him, the reason was that he was living in a world without sound having lost his hearing at a young age.
Arriving at the station, I quickly went into a gallery that was almost closing to ask for directions to the artist’s studio, once again there was a coincidence that left me without words.
As I opened the door a large scale painting of a circus was being displayed in the gallery’s wall.
Powerfully coloured with black and different shades of blues and grays, it was like the surface of the painting contained thousands of years, filled with prayers that cleaned the air, and the Piero that I had held in my hands was drawn into the canvas. A Landscape from an unknown place, the black sun that sinks into it, under the blue moonlight gypsies play the trumpet and flute.
Memories from a distant past came to me. From when I was a child and was on my own, and I would open an old music box. I could almost hear that sound again coming from the canvas.
As I stand in front of the painting I start losing sight of myself and time, almost like a lost puppy paralysed by the power of his work.
