ルイ・ドレーはフランスの彫刻家・現代美術家。ドレーは1971年にニースで生まれた。
卒業後、彼は1989年までJean Cortèseの下でébéniste（キャビネットメーカー）として修行する。芸術への関心を育んだ後、彼はla Villa Thiole校で学び、1994年試験に合格する。同年La Villa Arson校 に入学したが、より大きなものを追求するため退学する。 1999年、Diables-Bleusに加わり、その後Virginie Teurbaneのように数多くのアーティストとともに展示会や勉強会、さらに生徒たちを指導することとなる。多くの点で、ドレーの作品を見ることで、私たちは芸術・知識・社会そのものについて考えさせられる。 彼は自分自身を「イメージの密輸人」と定義し、さまざまな伝統や芸術家からインスピレーションを得てきた。 彼の作品は常に流動的であり、自分の限界を超越し変革していく。彼の作品は、絵画や彫刻はもちろんのこと、パフォーマンスアートやインスタレーションも含まれる。彼の作品のほとんどは人間の形を表しているのだが、実はそうした形態を超え思想やコンセプトを伝えているのだ。画家、彫刻家、金属工芸家でもあるドレーは多才な才能を持つだけでなく、常にさまざまな素材を試すことも怠らない。テクニック、材料、展示会、これらはすべてドレーの作品のメッセージを伝える重要な手段であり、それらを組み合わせることにより複合的な芸術的形態となる。彼の作品と対峙することで、私たちの心に感情が生まれ共感を覚える、そして深い思いが呼び覚まされるのだ。
Louis Dollé is a French contemporary artist who specializes in sculpture.
Louis Dollé was born in 1971 in Nice. After graduating, he trained to be an ébéniste (a cabinet-maker) under Jean Cortèse until 1989. After developing an interest in art, he attended la Villa Thiole, passing his exam in 1994. While he entered la Villa Arson in the same year, he left the school shortly after in pursuit of greater things. In 1999 he joined the collective Diables-Bleus, after which he collaborated with numerous artists like Virginie Teurbane, organizing exhibitions, classes, and training apprentices.
In many ways a critical artist, Dollé’s works are meant to challenge our view of art, knowledge, society and even humanity itself. He defines himself as an “smuggler of images” and draws inspiration from a variety of traditions and artists; his works are in constant flux, pushing their own limits and being reimagined even by the artist himself. Indeed, his oeuvre includes not just paintings and sculptures, but also performative art and in situ installations.
While most of his works take the shape of human figures, one gets the impression that, transcending their physical form, they are meant to convey some fundamental idea, concept or story. Multi-talented as Dollé is – a painter, as well as a sculptor and metal worker – he is constantly experimenting with different materials.
