In 2019, three jurors unequivocally awarded Kazuki Torigoe the Grand Prix at the Ei Exhibition organized by the Tagawa City Museum of Art, which was attended by just over 600 people. As this proves, he is an artist with the kind of talent the art world desires.
He exhibited at last year’s AFAF from three different galleries, although it was his first time at AFAF. Moreover, he sold out a total of 28 works, which was a big deal.
He has created a one-of-a-kind style that depicts in a single work the beauty of chance, with soft colors enveloping the entire picture plane, as if in harmony with the bold brushstrokes and flashes of paint.” (Ayumu Harada, curator, Tagawa Art Museum)
In recent years, he has attracted attention as an artist “inheriting the lineage of the Kyushu-Ha” in art magazines and other publications.

TORIGOE「X」

I am sure that everyone has some kind of anger or frustration toward the world that has no place for them.
I am motivated to create by the gap between the reality within me and the reality that lies in the world. I want to symbolize such “ideas”. That is why I am not satisfied with mere “pictures”.

The stronger such an impulse to inspire oneself is, the more “X” is born on the canvas, as if to overcome that feeling. Perhaps my attraction to Basquiat’s crown is also a result of such feelings crossing over. Kazuki Torigoe

It was when I was studying art in school. I had an assignment for a class, and I was casually putting my creativity to work at home. The dimly lit room was crisscrossed with faint lights emitted from the lights. The “X” jumped out at me like a cross or some kind of symbol.I felt as if it were a projection of my own thoughts at the time.
When we are young, we are all a bit pointy, aren’t we? I could see myself overlapping with myself, and as a matter of course, I added an “X” to the “picture” I had created and completed it.The teacher was quite surprised that I would put a cross in a picture that I had just finished. But for me, I always think that symbolizing the “idea” in one’s mind is the most important thing in expressing it as art.
In war and politics, why are such absurd things happening? There are plenty of things that make me think, “What is this?It is not my role to question realistically the contradictions that arise when people are grouped together instead of individually.
As an artist, I want to be an individual “human being” without belonging to anything. It is an artist’s privilege to continue to challenge with such a simple existence. By revealing my bare self, perhaps I can awaken the wild self within the viewer.
But whatever it is, I would be more than happy if even just one person could receive my thoughts. Kazuki Torigoe

Grand Prize for the work “A Record to be Remembered
A drop of water that becomes rain, eventually becomes a river, pours into the ocean, and spreads to the world…
I painted this work in the hope that my work would be a drop in the bucket.
A record that is remembered by people and overwritten anew. In Fukuoka, such memories and records are being born right now. In this context, I am currently working on a work based on the theme of “a record to be remembered.

Since ancient times, human beings have devoted themselves to making things with their souls as living creatures. To express this sense of wildness, I use not only existing painting materials but also coal tar, plaster, diatomaceous earth, soot, plaster, pigments, beeswax, acrylics, paint, bond, modeling paste, varnish, string gel, and many other materials.

Just as in ancient times when humans painted murals in caves with prayers and wishes, I immerse myself in the light of the sun and moon, feeling the wind and the sound of light outside day and night while creating.
With the desire to express something that transcends human reason, he creates his works by reconstructing that time and space while utilizing the momentum, delicacy, and coincidence of water.

The Internet, digital devices, contemporary knowledge and common sense, world affairs… I feel such various information and reflect it in my paintings through the filter of myself in the “Memorized Records” series I am currently working on.

Something that we, living in the modern age, have forgotten. I want to create something that is vague in our memories, but that questions the roots of humanity and appeals to our spirit. A drop of water connected to the ocean of art that spreads to the world.

I sincerely hope that my work will have such meaning in Fukuoka, the city where I was born and raised. Kazuki Torigoe

Recently, I think I have gradually come to understand what I have unconsciously valued in my painting since I was a small child and up until now.It is the process of tracing my own thoughts and memories and building a world on canvas that no one has ever seen before. It is only natural that all artists have their own thoughts. However, the real “reality” that each artist experiences exists at different times and in different ways. The finish “work” that emerges from each motif “object” will vary depending on what the artist feels there and what is important to them.

Based on my own experiences of time and things I have seen and experienced, I use all kinds of materials and phenomena with my own hands to imprint them on the canvas. For this purpose, I have been absorbing great artists and things in history with a voracious appetite.I have also been searching for materials that I can use to express how I feel in the present time.My never-ending thirst for the world continues to challenge me in every possible way to produce strokes that transcend even human movement. For me, this is the work and mission of a contemporary artist, and I work while reaffirming that this is what I want to do.

I create an irreplaceable and mysterious world in which the natural reality of phenomena can only exist on the canvas. The encounter of ordinary words and phrases used in daily life creates a world that expands infinitely on canvas.I hope that the viewers will input their own visuals and language into my work. This input becomes memory, and over time, a journey through time and space begins with the work.
