Seiryou Surusumi

Born in Taipei.
After graduating from Kumamoto University, worked as an instructor at Fukuoka’s National Juvenile Reformatory while self-studying painting. The paintings feature a gentle style reminiscent of Paul Klee’s fantasy paintings. In the 1950s, Surusumi piled the entries at the Nishinippon Art Exhibition and from 1950 won the Jiyu Art Exhibition for 3 consecutive years.
In 1957, he was deeply involved in the formation of the Kyushu-ha and exhibited in the “Group Q group exhibition”. Questioning the potententional of avant-garde art as abstract works of art informel, which was known as “Academism” within the group, started the Nishinippon group in 1959 and left Kyushu-ha. After that, together with Hidesaburo Saito and others they started the “ Nishinippon group exhibition” (Nishinippon Art Association Exhibition). From 1967 he devoted himself to the creation of art works.
Surusumi continued to create works in a variety of approaches, with colors and shapes as themes, works range from a gentle painting style to works that have an intense touch based on ink, these works are distinctive even in Kyushu-ha.
