Sakurai was born 1954 in Fukuoka and now lives in Tokyo. He is the eldest son of Sakurai Takami, the leader of the avant-garde art group “Kyushu-ha”. His talent for painting was already discovered in his childhood by his father and further developed in the unique environment he grew up in, surrounded by the Kyushu-ha members. In 1970 he moved to the United States with Takami at the age of 16. First he lived in the art commune “Konyaku”, launched by Takami, but after less than a year he left the commune and lived alone while attending high school. During the hippie culture that arose mainly among young Americans at the time, the encounter with Beatnik poet Allen Ginsberg as well as other experiences had a great influence on Tomokazu during his forming years.

After briefly returning to Japan, he went to France from 1978-1980 to study art.
In 1975 he designed the poster of Yamaha L-motion-Rock and the cover of the debut album “Uchuten” of Sun House (rock band).
In 1979 he exhibited “Hito to Kaze to Jitensha to” at the Novembre à Vitry exhibition (France). At that time he was drawn to futurist works such as Dali’s and Francis Bacon’s and his interest shifted towards the movements of a brush called “Zipp”.

1982 he received the West Japan Art Exhibition encouragement award. 1983 he exhibited at the Tokyo Central Museum Oil Painting Awards.
1987 he created a poster for the “Kokoro ni gizamu Auschwitz” exhibition at the Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art, which was included in the calendar of the Industrial Bank of Japan.
