Zohar Kawaharada

Zohar Kawaharada

【English】
Zohar is a multidisciplinary artist combining performance, video art, photography and sound into her work. Her work process always involves dwelling in a specific place for varying periods of time in an attempt to examine this place’s relationship to the body. She thoroughly observes the place’s inherent qualities, focusing on those aspects which evoke tensions and conflict. She investigates its political, cultural, and historical narratives: which forces are at stake, and which forces have vanished? Were traces left behind, or hidden? How has time altered the surface of this place? Her artistic practice stems from the existence of a conflict that cannot be reconciled with reality – a conflict which, in its search for an alternative mode of existence, finds its way into the imaginary. A significant part of her raw materials are performative actions in space. The performative aspect of her work is crucial in that it allows me to penetrate the environment she observes, or to blend into it. Sometimes, the performance takes place in front of an audience, other times it is captured by the lens of the camera. Performance might even be embedded in her everyday life, present through its very absence. She draw from the dual relationship between her personal biography and local history, using certain biographical facts which she expose, conceal, distort, or confess. Her installation works raise sensory alertness as a means to confront the viewers with their own bodily perception within the space they inhabit. The motif of the circle appears in her video and sound installations in both a structural and a conceptual way. The loop produces a state of consciousness that responds to trauma. It insists on reproducing this trauma in order to change it, and ensures its sustained existence at the same time. Similarly, she is fascinated by the fact that the basic mechanism of vision, like a camera obscura, requires complete darkness in order to see. This apparent paradox is a continuous source of inspiration and investigation in her practice: she covers up in order to see. She tries to look at areas of contention while hindering the gaze. In her works, light is never coincidental or naive. It is meant to expose, yet sometimes it scorches, blinds, destroys the integrity of the image.

Born 1984
Zohar Kawaharada is a photography, video and performance artist based in Tel Aviv. In her work processes, she investigates time and place via her own presence and examination of the body in relationship to that space. She purposely and diligently chooses places that evoke tension and conflict. By looking at the political, cultural and historical narratives of a place, she creates analogous situations to the universal questions of belonging: who stays, who leaves? What traces are left behind, which remnants are hidden, and which are exposed? She questions how time alters a space by imposing a dual relationship between personal biography and history, validating biographical facts while simultaneously concealing and distorting them.

Kawaharada often examines camera obscura techniques where the unravelling of the darkness leads her to the raw audio, visual and textual materials whose experiences document their own existence. Her repeated motif of the circle/cycle in a structural and metaphorical loop means the start is the end and so on. Her works present a conscious response to political and social anguish of a time and place where the insistence on repetition and change exacerbates and or alleviates the inherent trauma.
